Over a year ago I was searching for a "new" car, initially wanting to buy a late 944s or s2. Because located in the area where I live, I half-hartedly responded to an ad about selling a '87 924s.
When I first saw the car I was stunned. It seemed lower than normal 924s, was alpin white with golden pin stripes (factory) and had the red signum of "Max Moritz" on each of it's head lights. Max Moritz is a sports car dealer in Reutlingen, near Stuttgart. The color matching wheels are also alpin white with golden rims.
It was in a very good condition, with low miles, about 77.000, well maintained, driven by a middle aged woman. One week later a took it home, paying the requested price but negotiated a 20.000 km inspection and a new "tuev" and exhaust control plaquette into the price.
So far the car runs very well, the car is a absolute true sporty performer with a very good gas - mileage ratio (ca. 9 ltr on 100km). I frequently drive up to the lake constance with it, "pedal to the metal", and the car makes between 150 and 160 mile per hour (ca. 250km/h), and keeps it. But beware of side winds and start to brake VERY early at these speeds! On those tours it consumes about 13ltr @ 100km, which is absolutely amazing. It is absolutely a every day performer, I drive it to work about 60km day for day.
I found out afterwards that it is a special model, a "Le Mans" Version, of the 924S. It has a threaded and lowered front suspension and the special design (see the book "Original Porsche 924/944/968" by Peter Morgan on pg. 55/56). Only 50 cars were produced and sold in Germany! What a luck!
Greetings to all Porsche fans over the world,

Mark O. Schimmer

Well, I purchased this car about a month ago and you have no idea the agony I've gone through.... Not because of anything particularly wrong with the car (though there have been some minor fixer-uppers = ) but because I'm waiting on selling another car so I can transfer the Tags, Stickers, Insurance, ETC. To elaborate, I got this incredible RED Porsche sitting in my garage waiting and waiting to be let loose... I got it for $3000.00us my dad and myself have replaced the window motor (psg), fixed the hole under the battery ($#!^) with some heavy sanding and fiberglass, cleaned up the drv side window motor and rewelded the arm of it (the piece that buts up against the motor area that is welded down actually pushed up over the other piece...), as well as some other minor things. BUT the most interesting part about this car is the mileage! I'm not sure what transpired in between but the odometer was replaced with 21,978 mi. on it in 2000 and the car currently has 11,940mi...that's only 33,918 mi <WOW> = )
Anyway, after I get this badboy out on the streets I'll be sure to post something on the forums.

87_perez.jpg (38826 bytes)I purchased my car in the fall of 1998, the body was in fair shape with a good interior, a very bad red-metal flake paint job. In the spring of 1999 I took the car to a body shop and asked for the body to be stripped, and repainted original guards red. The project took over a year. I replaced all hoses, new battery, stereo, speakers, antenna, brakes, shocks, new water pump, K&N air filter, ignition wires, new exhaust system, Carrera 2 Type Wheels and tires, air dam, reflective insulation under hood, new dash cover. Made a new friend " Gene Kirschner of Autohaus" in Chatham NJ, he helped with tech problems and questions.

Total mileage to date 100,033 miles, the engine runs strong, my future project would be to up the horse power. For the money I couldn't find a better deal, and have more fun.

My office manager bought this car new. She offered it to me when it had 60000 miles on it. I had never driven a 924 before. After driving 911's for more than 30 years I was pleasantly surprised how well the 924 drove and the shifting was extremely easy compared to a 911. I now drive the car to work every day and am not "looking down" on watercooled Porsche owners any longer.

He now had an extra car that he could not afford, so he had to get rid of one, and FAST!!! So he sold me his 1987 924S. It had a few little problems that were easy to fix, like a timing belt, power steering leak, and some minor cosmetic problems, but other than that, it was great. I got it for Really cheap, with 102000 miles on it. I did a normal tune up, changed the fluids (by the way, Redline Gear oil is AWESOME in these cars) and it runs better than it has in years. I can honestly say this is my best car EVER!!! Runs like a dream. This is the family's 2nd Porsche (at this time with 7 before these two) and we like the water cooled engines. I'll send in some pictures of my 924S sittin' next to my dad's 968 Cabriolet. To those who own a Porsche of some sort, happy driving. to those who are lookin' to buy one, Porsches are GREAT cars. White 5 speed with 87K on the odometer. when purchased in Aug. 2001. Just a few problems to be taken care of but has a good body AND personality. Somewhat louder than stock (no) thanks to an after-market catalytic converter which necessitated exhaust pipe alterations... but I'm getting used to the rumble.

87_toddgoranflo924s.jpg (68777 bytes)I bought this car in March of 2002 from the original owner, an ER doctor, who happens to live next door to my boss. Which is how I found it.

Anyway, this car is in immaculate shape. It had been garaged since day one, and it's never been driven in the snow. It's always been taken to one of the 4 big certified Porsche repair centers around the KC area. (BHR, JP Werks, Aristocrat, and Autosport Gallery). The paint is in great shape, with the exception of a few chips on the front valance. Aside from a slightly cracked dash, the interior is also in great shape. No torn seats, no broken glovebox, no blown speakers, but it could definitely use a new pair of floormats. It also still had the original toolkit, tire bag and plastic gloves, and a small bottle of touch up paint still in the shrinkwrap. He wasn't sure what happened to the tire pump. The owner also had just about all of the repair and maintenance receipts from day one. He even had the original window sticker among other things.

The ONLY downside to this car is that it's never had the timing belts or water pump replaced. When I bought it, it had 50,018 miles on it. Now it has 50,074. So it's right on the edge, if not over. So needless to say it's been in my garage ever since, and is started up and taken around the block once a month. By July '02 it will become my daily driver and the belts and pump maintenance will have been done.

For now, the only modification (if you want to call it that), will be to put in a K&N filter. I put them in all our cars. After that, I've been thinking about a Momo steering wheel, something smaller in diameter and more comfortable than the stock wheel.

I bought my 87'924S at the end of April 02' on a lucky find...It is black with tan leather interior, and both or in very good shape with a very few minor repairs needed... The only thing is I've only been able to enjoy its comfort for a week out of the past month and a half. First the water pump, then the timing belt, and that started it all...

No one informed me that the pleasure of owning a car of sort, meant that you would be broke until it's completely fixed... LOL... The parts store that I ended up ordering my timing belt and water pump, needless to say after special ordering, and days of waiting, sent me the wrong timing belt!

Now I have been fighting to afford getting my head rebuilt and hoping that that is all the damage that was caused by the timing belt being spun off...

Anyways, enough bellyaching, I am very interested in fixing my toy, and would greatly appreciate any sites, companies, etc., to get parts from at a fairly reasonable cost...Also, and sites, companies, etc., for performance, body, etc., as I am joining a unique car club as soon as I can get my car going...Thank you for all your help and your stories help me to keep looking and not give up...as evidently there is plenty of parts out there I'm just not looking in the right places...Also any mechanical advice about the 87' 924S 2.5L would be very appreciated also, as I am mechanically inclined just evidently not with this car...:) Thank you again and God Bless!!!!!

Bought in 1998 with a melted head, this 87 has tons of new stuff with inb the last year. major service has included a new head, main bearings replaced, new water pump, timing belt, rotors and brakes all around, new exhaust sysytem from the cat back, new tires, new drivers side door handle, lots of new seals (including the hatch), a full alignment, and more. The car is finally running the way a porsche should, and after alot of elbow grease , is looking pretty good as well, the interior is mint and sports "porsche" graphic seats. Since its loaded and comfortable ,this car has become my daily driver, and due to the automatic tranny, will probably remain just that. Plans for the futre include a 944 type front spoiler section. please see also my custom 924 project car, in the 1978 section.

"Scruffy" was previously owned by Rich and Marchell Fletcher of Durango, CO. Most recently it was owned by Chuck Hanson of Albuquerque, NM. This 924S SE is factory equipped with the M030 sport suspension. The SE was only available in black with burgundy and gray cloth interior and all were lightweight cars with minimal options. The A/C in my car was professionally removed as a weight consideration and the car tips the scales in autocross trim at just over 2600 lbs. This car won the CSL class at the 2000 SCCA Solo 2 National Championships with Marchell at the wheel and also set 1st and 3rd quickest times in the open class on day two of that event. In addition, at the 1988 Porsche Parade autocross, Marchell drove Scruffy to the fastest female driver's time in ALL classes. The car also won the P6 (men's) class that year, beating all the 944's. It has a 26.5mm front bar, Koni sport yellows, the factory coil-over struts are resting on the next-to-lowest threads, the rear is lowered and it has a limited slip diff. I run Kumho or Hoosier autocross tires on all four wheels. It now has just over 140k miles and much effort (and money) has been put into the car to replace and rebuild wearing components.

It is an excellent autocross/track car as well as a fun and reliable street car. It has been sold. We hope that the new owners will reestablish contact with us.

This car has only 50,265 miles on it. I've just had $1,200 in maintenance and repairs done for the timing belt service and rear end repaired. It's fast, drives great now and next is a right front tie rod and 4-wheel alignment.

I think this is a great car. I've got the 030 Club Sport package setup, and my option sheet has it as the US Le Mans Special Edition. This car has minimum options, AC, power steering and cloth seats.

I've wanted a 924 type car since I saw one during my senior year at a Porsche-Audi dealership in College Hill, Cincinnati OH. This outperforms my 88 3.8 Mustang. Looking forward to autocrossing and maybe some club racing?

My second year owning this little black dream car after some geezer totaled my 16v Scirocco. Bought it with 78K on the clock. Have had very little problems except for the expected wear items, such as fuel lines, filters, belts and clutch, master and slave.

Have updated or upgraded the following.

- MSDS Air intake
- Europroducts chip
- Broadfoot crank, alternator and power steering pump underdrive pulleys
- C&M oil filter
- Supertrapp 2.5" inlet tuneable stainless exhaust
- Optima battery
- Hella driving lights
- Koni Sport shocks/struts
- Weltmeister strut tower brace
- 16" Design 90 wheels with 205 frt and 225 rr Hoosier's new Z rated street radials
- Porterfield R4 pads and ATE Power Disks
- Momo Comp wheel with Smart wheel spacer
- RPM d' Avant Garde billet shift lever with Momo Comp knob
- Alloy pedal kit from AJ-USA
- Konig SP400 seat

I am currently waiting on Earl's brake lines, Weltmeister front sway bar and ADDCO rear bar.

I am trying to find Euro bumpers. The bumpers will help improve the sleek look of the car which is marred by the huge ugly US spec bumpers. Shaving the trim off the sides of the car has also helped in that regard.

This car is very quick for a NA 2.5L water cooler and is a joy to drive

88wright.jpg (68163 bytes) This is a fully loaded 924S, including leather, factory floor mats and bra, the car has it's original coat of Grand Prix White still in flawless condition, this is contrasted by Black leather interior, the car has had the windows tinted and a set of driving lights installed, and also a cd player, other than that the car is completely stock. It has only 115 Kms on it (approx. 70,000 miles), and runs like new. This car has the automatic transmission, if anyone knows how many 88's were built with auto's please email me.

Webmeister Note: Check Brad's 79 and 78 also!

My father used to have a '77 924 and then an '87 S which lead me to acquire this little gem in Sept 2001. This car has less than 70,000 miles on the clock and has remained a British Columbia PCar. The car is mint and is treated like a queen by its owner.
I have added the following modifications:

-Bursch Headers
-Racing Camshaft
-K&N 1:1 Throttle Cam
-K&N Air Filter
-FlowMaster Exhaust
-Design 90 Wheels w/Yokohama AVS Sport
(225/50/16 rear and 205/55/16 front)

As a result of the aforementioned mods, she can almost hit 65 MPH in second gear!

I feed her a clean diet of 94 octane fuel, and Castrol non-synth 20W50 every 3,000 to 5,000 kilometers. The car is perfect in every way and never autocrossed.

My 1988 924S is a full Concours car which has competed on the Parade, Zone and regional level with several Best of Show and numerous First in Class awards. The car currently has only been driven 14,000 miles. It is a very nice example of an original 924S model, Guards Red/black interior with no modifications or non-Porsche equipment of any kind.

Rich and Marchell Fletcher Durango, CO.

The SE was a factory optioned car with an M030 sport suspension, which came only in black with burgundy interior carpets and black with burgundy striped cloth seats. All were "light" cars with minimal options. Ours is running SCCA Pro Solo and Solo events in addition to PCA events and open track. In this car Marchell was the fastest woman in all classes at the 1998 Porsche Parade autocross. I won my P6 class (Yes, a 924 beat all the 944s...). It has a 26.5mm front bar, Koni sport yellows, the factory coil-over struts are resting on the next-to-lowest threads, the rear is stock, but lowered to be even with the front, and we've got a 7Q Limited slip. We run BFGoodrich CompTA G-Force 225/50/15s on all four wheels. "Scruffy" as we call him (the previous owners were clueless about whole-car maintenance... they thought keeping the paint pretty was enough.), has 132-K miles and has recently received many freshened parts in preparation for another season of events. We love this cars' well balanced performance characteristics.

I am the 2nd owner of this black water cooler. Bought it from Porsche when it was 9 months old and have truly enjoyed caring for it for more than 10 years. I believe the 88 S is one of the 924s to have and keep, as it is the last of the line of the original 924 concept. With only 2,190 88s imported, does anyone out there have any idea as to how many are still registered in the U.S. 11 years later??

I have a Slate Gray Metallic 1988 924S. It is largely stock with minor modifications, including 944 Turbo Sway Bars, DME Chip, and Koni Sport Shocks. I use a set of forged Flat Dish wheels for summer use and Phone Dials for Winter use. I have installed a Momo Steering Wheel and Shift Knob and Mugen racing pedal inserts. I recently replaced driver's seat with Cerullo GT seat which is a major improvement. The audio system has been upgraded with a Sony headunit, four channel amp, under the passenger seat, Polk 4x6 speakers in the front, Radio Shack dome tweeter extensions on each door, and JBL 6-1/2" in the side panels. The car more than 130,000 miles,
it is my daily driver and my track car. I try to do most of the repair and maintenance work myself

1988 924S, Red w/ Black Interior. Sunroof, AC, other standard factory items. Purchased for $2500 needing a clutch and engine leak fix. Replaced the belts, water pump and associated stuff, replaced the clutch and put in a spring disk, also replaced the wheel bearings front and rear, plus the rear brakes. Then the fun started.

I installed turbo 7 and 8 x 16 wheels and 205/55 - 225/50-ZR16 tires, to go with my M030 front sway bar, 22mm Weltmeister rear bar, 220# front springs and Koni adjustable sports front and rear. I will install 27mm torsion bars this winter to complete the suspension package. I also installed a harness bar and 5-points for driver ed events. I ran it at Roebling Road last month at our Driver Ed, and was impressed.

The car is still a little short on power - my next gig.

By the way, I have a 78 924 that I bought in 1985 for my wife. My son is now driving it, and it has 250,000 miles on it. He regularly goes to DE events at Roebling. My wife drives a like-new survivor '69 912 with 60K miles. It was stored in a garage for almost 25 years.

I have stockpiled lots of 924 parts from three parts cars. If anyone needs anything, let me know.
