This section begins with the Carrera GT, model 937. There were only 406 built. The chassis numbers run from WPOZZZ93ZBN70 0001 to 0406. WPO is the world manufacturer code for Porsche - these VINs now follow the international standard. ZZZ tells us this is a Europe/RestOfWorld spec model. 93ZBN7 is the internal Porsche model designation for the 924 Carrera GT. Z is a test code. B is model year 1981. N is the factory at Neckarsulm. The first zero after the model designation is a code for body and engine.

Following the GT is Frank Gallogly's GTR. Note that the GTR serial numbers are wpozzz93zbS72 0001 to 0020.

This GTS is one of the Club Sport cars, with built in cage and cut-off switches. I acquired the car in 1997, and race it in PCA Club Racing, Class C. The history of the car: It was the factory press car for some months after construction. It was then acquired by Bruce Leven - of "Bayside Disposal 935" fame - and imported in 1982. Not sure of its history when Bruce owned it, but in 1984 or so, it was acquired by Don Istook, Texas. Don titled it in Texas, and drove it on the street for several years. Subsequently, the car was purchased by Dave Maynard in Mass., and Dave used it in the early years of PCA Club Racing, running it as a GT car to numerous class wins.

I have always wanted a real "plastic Porsche", and when Dave told me he was interested in selling the GTS, I had admired the car a bit, and even thought its not all plastic, there is quite a bit, and its a bit different. Under the PCA class structure, it seemed to be a fit to Class C, since Dave did not modify the car, and its power and weight seemed appropriate. As a club sport model, running the published 1.1 bar boost, it is supposed to make 275 hp, and the weight with 1/2 tank of gas is 2340 lbs. Its an interesting car to race - superb handling, brakes, and balance, and pretty good "snort" when the turbo is spooled up, but the stock gears make it a "2 speed" for most tracks, mostly 3rd and 4th. I've had a few podium finishes, and a bunch of fun races.

The car has several unique issues for maintenance and service. The most spectacular being that the lower front cross member is welded in place (for added stiffness), so the oil pan cannot be removed in the car. I have done one engine rebuild, and engine removal is quite a chore.

Just purchased from the Matsuda collection. The car is brand new with 100 original miles, and never raced. An absolute time capsule!

Vehicle Identification Number really changed in 81. WPO is the world manufacturer code for Porsche. AA0 tells us this is a US spec model. 922bn4 is the internal Porsche model designation for the 924. 2 is a test code. B is model year 1981. N is the factory at Neckarsulm. The VIN is found on a metal tag behind the windshield.chassisnumlate1.jpg (110923 bytes)

The chassis number is stamped into the firewall in front of the battery; it is almost identical to the VIN.

This 1981 924 was purchased in July of 1982 when is was about a year old. It was an original M471 Car with the four-wheel disc brake option. It is Metallic Black and presently has 6x16" 931 forged wheels on it. The car was extensively autocrossed in the 1980s, winning six consecutive SCCA SOLO II divisional events and the respective classes those years. Competed twice in SCCA SSA events until they banned the full disc-brake option. Won both times. Competed in the Golden gate Region Autocross series 1983-1989, winning class each year. The last two years the car was moved up into the 944 class with wins there as well. Also competed in Zone 7 autocross series in the same years, winning classes those years. Over 180 class wins. Car presently has 110,000 miles on the original drivetrain and has also been shown in the Zone 7 concours series. Many of the Weltmeister 924/944 suspension pieces were developed on this particular car. Presently equipped with Koni Sport Hydraulic shocks and Stock swaybars. Front upper strut mounts updated to the M030 951 for better steering response. Has a 944 leather sport steering wheel, Recaro Sport SE seats, original dash with no cracks. Has rear spoiler and 931 lower trim and mud flaps.

THE CAR WAS GIVEN TO ME WHEN IT DEVELOPED A SERIOUS ELECTRICAL PROBLEM. AFTER REDESIGNING THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND REPLACING THE FUSE BOX TO ACCEPT THE NUMEROUS EXTRA OPTIONS THAT IT HAD, IT WAS TIME TO GET IT RUNNING AGAIN. THE SPECS ON THE CAR ARE UNKNOWN. THE ORIGINAL OWNER COMMISSIONED THE CAR, MOVED TO EUROPE AND HAD MORE WORK DONE ON THE CAR( INCLUDING THE EURO-PISTONS). THE TRUTH IS I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS IN THE CAR. I FINALLY GOT PARTS REPLACED AND THE CAR RUNNING. THEN COMPLETELY CHANGING THE INTERIOR (CUSTOM EVERYTHING-HAND FABRICATED CONSOLE AND DASH). NOW I AM ALTERING THE BODY.

1. REMOVING THE HATCHBACK AND BUILDING A HORIZONTAL FLAT FRAME AND VERTICAL POWER WINDOW TO TAKE IT'S PLACE (IMAGINE A 914 OR MR2)
2. WIDENING THE 1/4 PANELS AND FENDERS BY 2 INCHES INSTEAD OF BUYING KIT TO DO THIS.
3. MODIFYING THE FRONT AND REAR BUMPERS (MOVING RADIATOR UP TO SAVE IT FROM "TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES).

ANYBODY HAVE ANY OTHER IDEAS? POSSIBLE MAKING THE 924 FLY OR PUTTING A MODIFIED V8 UNDER THE HOOD

This is the 924 I bought from Michael Brown. He got it real cheap and I bought it for $400.00 sight unseen. It served me as a daily driver for a year, then finally the leaking battery box and condensation caused the fuel pump relay to burn out. Then after a deployment I returned to a rolling green house. The interior was covered with mildew and moss. To say it needs all of the weather stripping replaced in order to make it a reliable daily driver again, is an understatement. It is running, but it is no longer a daily driver. All told have about $800.00 into it. It is not as good a car performance wise as my '79 was, in time it may be.

Future plans? But I intend to use it as a rolling test bed for things that I have thought about over the years. Like installing a defroster from a '83-'85 944. Making up an inexpensive dry sump system. Swapping to a 931 hydraulic clutch. Coming up with an affordable EFI. And maybe when he is old enough and ready to drive, giving it to my son.

I bought this car for $1500 CDN with a '86 Chevy V6 2.8 as part of the deal. I am the third owner of this car: the first abused it, the second let it rot in a shop. I am working to restore this car to its previous glory. It is the first car I have ever bought and it is my first project. I am allowing myself one and a half months for the entire project, which includes every aspect of the car.

Purchased "Moby Porsche" as my sixth Porsche beginning with a 1962 356B cabriolet in 1964,then a 912,914-1.7,914-2.0 and a 911E while stationed in Germany with the USAF. It was acquired from the second owner on Sept 22, 1987 with 79,242mi on the clock. Current mileage is 233,700. The engine has not been removed from the car yet. I'm on the second turbo but other than that it's a dream., At the last leak-down the low cylinder was at 85%. It is a daily driver and as long as the weather stays cool, I wouldn't trade it for anything. When it gets hot here in Southern California, I beg for the wife's Honda. I hold PCA Certificate of Authenticity PCNA5059 on the car dated 9/24/93.

I was ready to give up driving and start riding. Then one day I made the mistake of driving a 931.Oh boy! What a ride! So I bought this pristine example.Love at first sight turned into obsession at fourth ride. But not having other people who appreciate this fine car and guilt of not feeling worthy of it I put it up for sale at a Porsche website to a good home ONLY !! And a guy named Vinny Ponz (God bless his mother) answers the ad and gets me involved with MetroNY PCA and its wonderful members.Well the car is no more for sale unless I am dead broke and the buyer passes a technical, moral and oral test.As a matter of fact I bought my second one,a 1980 931 EURO with a bad engine (anyone with an extra engine laying around?) and am planning to use it strictly for track. This also was because of that guy Vinnie. If I catch him !!! Boy oh boy !!!) I am also trying to get my hands on a pristine 82 (No I won"t tell you where !!!) I feel terribly obligated and promise to save and protect all 931's dead or alive and will probably die broke because of it !!! (Anyone for a "SAVE THE 931 FOUNDATION"?? ) Anyway right now I am waiting for this gas attendant with an 81 US model to give up trying to figure out his fuel cut-off problem. He doesn't even know what he's got!! He is not worthy !!! Me worthy !!! Me save all 931s from evil souls!! Oh boy !!! Me go cucckkooo !!! Somebody stop me !!! Vinnieeee!!!! Vinnieeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!

I bought my 81 924 turbo in 1994, it was in great shape and ran beautifully. It ran like this for a few months and since then I've had nothing but problems. The fuel distributor stopped working and I eventually replaced it last year. Still doesn't run and now the fuel pump has seized up. I also have a leak in the clutch system somewhere between the master cylinder and trans. There was also a lot of little minor problems. I want to keep this car, I really like it. It has only about 50,000 miles, leather, sunroof, 16" wheels, rear wiper and overall in great shape. Any suggestions?

Carrera GT conversion, w/ factory intercooler, GTS pistons, raised boost, suspension mods. The '81 is a different story. I bought it for the sole intent of converting it to a Carrera GT. It only has 45k miles on the clock. Over the last 3 years, yes, that long :(, I have been basically making a pain in the ass out of myself to anyone that has either owned or even touched one of these cars. And I have been really lucky in the quest. The Carrera GT club here in the states has been very helpful, as has been a gentleman at PCNA who not only owned a GT, but was involved in converting two standard 931's into 937's for his friends. I have the 924/931/937 parts fiche so I am able to compare specific items between the three cars and get actual part numbers to settle any arguments.

What I am still needing some parts for the car, most notably the air ducts leading to the front brakes (but I found a set in britain, I just do not know yet if I am the lucky one who gets them), modified ignition system and the modified turbocharger. And I have given up on getting the original factory fenders, the ones that are flexible polyurathane, in favour of the fiberglass ones used on the GTS car. I do have the correct factory intercooler for the car. Took awhile to track that one down. It will be a bit yet before it gets completely finished, but I am hoping by next may.

How good is your german?  that shows the differences between a GT and the standard 931. The info is supposedly taken from the factory literature (factory is about 30 minutes from his house - must be nice!!) and is really good. But my german is not the greatest and I am having other people try and translate for me. Will take some time before it is done correctly.

Tom is an electronics engineer and we have discussed making the mods to the stock ignition system to make it match the GT/GTS cars but we have not come up with a game plan yet.

I do not track either car, something that I would like to do next spring though.

with 43k original miles. It's Guards Red with black leatherette and original ATS "BBS-look" wheels. Since it has been sitting so long, the clutch slave cylinder was was sticking, so I replaced it and flushed all the hydrolics and refilled with ATE Super Blue. I'm using Castrol GTS 20/50 until I can locate the leaking oil line, then I'm switching to Redline. I'm also using MTL in the tranny. The turbo doesn't smoke, but I can't find a reciept for the timing belt change so I'm going to do that pretty soon. But I ramble...It's a great car, lots of fun. I let my M3-freak friend drive it and he loved it. It's nowhere near as fast as his '85 (740il mass flow sensor, Dinan chip, etc, etc.), but it's actually a lot more fun to drive. It handle like my old 240Z but with a lot more go.
